Instant Karma lyrics
Instant karma's gonna hit you
Gonna hit your back off your feet
Better recognize your brothers
Every one you meet
To me the pledge was not just a few meaningless words that we uttered at school each morning.
To me it dictated a way of life in the country where I was born. Those words made me proud to live in a place that cherished freedom and equality. The words stayed with me when I enlisted in the Marine Corps right out of high school in the early 60s. It was a dangerous time. America’s will was being tested when the Soviets thought it was a good idea to place their missiles in Cuba.
I feel it’s being tested again with the election of a President and a political party that supports the idea that democracy is not a good thing for them. That it perhaps provides too much freedom in the pursuit of happiness. They want to protect their millions by cutting their taxes and funding for programs that serve most Americans. And their right wing agenda believes the rights of women and many minorities should be taken away because they don’t like it.
Our freedom to choose will soon evaporate before our eyes if we don’t gather the courage to fight back.
Instant Karma lyrics one:
Why in the world are we here?
Surely not to live in pain and fear?
Why on earth are you there?
You're everywhere, come and get your share
That’s why a political action group called Indivisible was created.
It’s described as a movement of thousands of group leaders and more than a million members taking regular actions to resist the GOPs agenda.
The neighbors in our hood held their first meeting recently and it’s clear that many are willing to commit to that effort even those who were raised in conservative families.
Speaker one :
“But I'm really, uh, afraid. Yeah. Well I'm really afraid. Uh, I'm a I've been a democratic believer since I was born. Even though my father was a republican for a long time, it didn't matter.
I believed in the system of democracy, and I see that failing. And it scares the BBs out of me because I believe in it.”
Speaker two:
“For me, one of the things that really drew me to Indivisible was that they do send out, these actionable items, like, contact your representative about this. So for me, I think the beauty of it is it takes out some of that like underlying work of figuring out what is the most important issue right now. They kind of do the sifting for you of like, hey, contact people about this right now. And it makes it a little easier because I do feel overwhelmed by just how much there is.”
And I so for me that's what really drew me to this was, hey, they already have this big organization and they already kind of know. What are the biggest things that we need to do that can safeguard our democracy, that can keep our institutions in place. And it takes a little off of our plates so that we don't get as overwhelmed and gives us something we can do. Because like you, I'm I found myself very concerned about what the future might look like. But if we can focus on what we can do, it makes it more manageable like, the whole how do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time. It gives you that bite.”
Indivisible’s direction is aimed at providing a more organized approach to the effort of saving democracy but there is a clear benefit to community organizing. It’s not as scary when more people are involved.
As for strategy, the Daughter of MLK and Coretta Scott King recently posted this advice:
Keep your message positive.
No more helpless/hopeless talk.
Be careful not to spread fake news.
Take care of yourselves, and Resist!
And, May We All Shine On!
Instant Karma lyrics 2:
Like the moon and the stars and the sun
Well we all shine on
Like the moon and the stars and the sun
